Martin Atkins 1d3e34e35e command: New -replace=... planning option
This allows a similar effect to pre-tainting an object but does the action
within the context of a normal plan and apply, avoiding the need for an
intermediate state where the old object still exists but is marked as
tainted.

The core functionality for this was already present, so this commit is
just the UI-level changes to make that option available for use and to
explain how it contributed to the resulting plan in Terraform's output.

terraform: validate providers' schemas during NewContext (#28124)
* checkpoint save: update InternalValidate tests to compare exact error

* configschema: extract and extend attribute validation

This commit adds an attribute-specific InternalValidate which was extracted directly from the block.InternalValidate logic and extended to verify any NestedTypes inside an Attribute. Only one error message changed, since it is now valid to have a cty.NilType for Attribute.Type as long as NestedType is set.

* terraform: validate provider schema's during NewContext

We haven't been able to guarantee that providers are validating their own schemas using (some version of) InternalValidate since providers were split out of the main codebase. This PR adds a call to InternalValidate when provider schemas are initially loaded by NewContext, which required a few other changes:

InternalValidate's handling of errors vs multierrors was a little weird - before this PR, it was occasionally returning a non-nil error which only stated "0 errors occurred" - so I addressed that in InternalValidate. I then tested this with a configuration that was using all of our most popular providers, and found that at least on provider had some invalid attribute names, so I commented that particular validation out. Adding that in would be a breaking change which we would have to coordinate with enablement and providers and (especially in this case) make sure it's well communicated to external provider developers.

I ran a few very unscientific tests comparing the timing with and without this validation, and it appeared to only cause a sub-second increase.

* refactor validate error message to closer match the sdk's message

* better error message

* tweak error message: move the instruction to run init to the end of the message, after the specific error.

Alisdair McDiarmid 86495f93cb views: Fix missing source in diagnostic output
The previous implementation of views was copying and embedding the base
View struct in each individual view. While this allowed for easy access
to the interface of that struct (both in the view and externally), it more
importantly completely broke the ability of the diagnostic printer to
output source code snippets.

This is because the `configSources` field on the base view is lazily set
after the config loader is initialized. In the commands ported to use
views, this happens after the base View struct is copied, so we are
updating the wrong copy of the struct.

This commit fixes this with a simple mechanical refactor: keep a pointer
to the base View struct instead, and update all of the individual views
to explicitly refer to that struct to access its fields and methods.

This is not a particularly satisfying solution, but I can't find
anything clearly better. It might be worth exploring the alternative
approach in the view for the new test command, which explicitly pulls
its dependencies out of the base view, rather than retaining a full
reference. Maybe there's a third way which is better still.

Alisdair McDiarmid 68558ccd54 backend/local: Replace CLI with view instance
This commit extracts the remaining UI logic from the local backend,
and removes access to the direct CLI output. This is replaced with an
instance of a `views.Operation` interface, which codifies the current
requirements for the local backend to interact with the user.

The exception to this at present is interactivity: approving a plan
still depends on the `UIIn` field for the backend. This is out of scope
for this commit and can be revisited separately, at which time the
`UIOut` field can also be removed.

Changes in support of this:

- Some instances of direct error output have been replaced with
  diagnostics, most notably in the emergency state backup handler. This
  requires reformatting the error messages to allow the diagnostic
  renderer to line-wrap them;
- The "in-automation" logic has moved out of the backend and into the
  view implementation;
- The plan, apply, refresh, and import commands instantiate a view and
  set it on the `backend.Operation` struct, as these are the only code
  paths which call the `local.Operation()` method that requires it;
- The show command requires the plan rendering code which is now in the
  views package, so there is a stub implementation of a `views.Show`
  interface there.

Other refactoring work in support of migrating these commands to the
common views code structure will come in follow-up PRs, at which point
we will be able to remove the UI instances from the unit tests for those
commands.

Mildwonkey/providers interface renaming (#27805)
* providers.Interface: huge renamification

This commit renames a handful of functions in the providers.Interface to
match changes made in protocol v6. The following commit implements this
change across the rest of the codebase; I put this in a separate commit
for ease of reviewing and will squash these together when merging.

One noteworthy detail: protocol v6 removes the config from the
ValidateProviderConfigResponse, since it's never been used. I chose to
leave that in place in the interface until we deprecate support for
protocol v5 entirely.

Note that none of these changes impact current providers using protocol
v5; the protocol is unchanged. Only the translation layer between the
proto and terraform have changed.

Alisdair McDiarmid a7b7cd29fc cli: Migrate Terraform UI hook to command views
Move the code which renders Terraform hook callbacks as UI into the
views package, backed by a views.View instead of a cli.Ui. Update test
setup accordingly.

To allow commands to control this hook, we add a hooks member on the
backend Operation struct. This supersedes the hooks in the Terraform
context, which is not directly controlled by the command logic.

This commit should not change how Terraform works, and is refactoring in
preparation for more changes which move UI code out of the backend.

Alisdair McDiarmid 4991cc4835 cli: Improve error for invalid -target flags
Errors encountered when parsing flags for apply, plan, and refresh were
being suppressed. This resulted in a generic usage error when using an
invalid `-target` flag.

This commit makes several changes to address this. First, these commands
now output the flag parse error before exiting, leaving at least some
hint about the error. You can verify this manually with something like:

    terraform apply -invalid-flag

We also change how target attributes are parsed, moving the
responsibility from the flags instance to the command. This allows us to
customize the diagnostic output to be more user friendly. The
diagnostics now look like:

```shellsession
$ terraform apply -no-color -target=foo
Error: Invalid target "foo"
Resource specification must include a resource type and name.
```

Finally, we add test coverage for both parsing of target flags, and at
the command level for successful use of resource targeting. These tests
focus on the UI output (via the change summary and refresh logs), as the
functionality of targeting is covered by the context tests in the
terraform package.

Alisdair McDiarmid ca23a096d8 cli: Remove legacy positional path arguments
Several commands continued to support the legacy positional path
argument to specify a working directory. This functionality has been
replaced with the global -chdir flag, which is specified before any
other arguments, including the sub-command name.

This commit removes support for the trailing path parameter from
most commands. The only command which still supports a path argument is
fmt, which also supports "-" to indicate receiving configuration from
standard input.

Any invocation of a command with an invalid trailing path parameter will
result in a short error message, pointing at the -chdir alternative.

There are many test updates in this commit, almost all of which are
migrations from using positional arguments to specify a working
directory. Because of the layer at which these tests run, we are unable
to use the -chdir argument, so the churn in test files is larger than
ideal. Sorry!

Kristin Laemmert 04be220f5f deprecate helper/copy
helper/copy CopyDir was used heavily in tests. It differes from
internal/copydir in a few ways, the main one being that it creates the
dst directory while the internal version expected the dst to exist
(there are other differences, which is why I did not just switch tests
to using internal's CopyDir).

I moved the CopyDir func from helper/copy into command_test.go; I could
also have moved it into internal/copy and named it something like
CreateDirAndCopy so if that seems like a better option please let me
know.

helper/copy/CopyFile was used in a couple of spots so I moved it into
internal, at which point I thought it made more sense to rename the
package copy (instead of copydir).

There's also a `go mod tidy` included.

terraform: remove state from `validate` graph walk (#26063)
This pull reverts a recent change to backend/local which created two context, one with and one without state. Instead I have removed the state entirely from the validate graph (by explicitly passing a states.NewState() to the validate graph builder).

This changed caused a test failure, which (ty so much for the help) @jbardin discovered was inaccurate all along: the test's call to `Validate()` was actually what was removing the output from state. The new expected test output matches terraform's actual behavior on the command line: if you use -target to destroy a resource, an output that references only that resource is *not* removed from state even though that test would lead you to believe it did.

This includes two tests to cover the expected behavior:

TestPlan_varsUnset has been updated so it will panic if it gets more than one request to input a variable
TestPlan_providerArgumentUnset covers #26035

terraform: return `initialization required` error when provider schemas not found (#24715)
A side effect of the various changes to the provider installer included losing the initialization required error message which would occur if a user removed or modified the .terraform directory.

Previously, plugin factories were created after the configuration was loaded, in terraform.NewContext. Terraform would compare the required providers (from config and state) to the available providers and return the aforementioned error if a provider was missing.

Provider factories are now loaded at the beginning of any terraform command, before terraform even loads the configuration, and therefore before terraform has a list of required providers.

This commit replaces the current error when a providers' schema cannot be found in the provider factories with the init error, and adds a command test (to plan tests, for no real reason other than that's what I thought of first).

addrs: embed Provider in AbsProviderConfig instead of Type
a large refactor to addrs.AbsProviderConfig, embedding the addrs.Provider instead of a Type string. I've added and updated tests, added some Legacy functions to support older state formats and shims, and added a normalization step when reading v4 (current) state files (not the added tests under states/statefile/roundtrip which work with both current and legacy-style AbsProviderConfig strings).

The remaining 'fixme' and 'todo' comments are mostly going to be addressed in a subsequent PR and involve looking up a given local provider config's FQN. This is fine for now as we are only working with default assumption.

Initial steps towards AbsProviderConfig/LocalProviderConfig separation (#23978)
* Introduce "Local" terminology for non-absolute provider config addresses

In a future change AbsProviderConfig and LocalProviderConfig are going to
become two entirely distinct types, rather than Abs embedding Local as
written here. This naming change is in preparation for that subsequent
work, which will also include introducing a new "ProviderConfig" type
that is an interface that AbsProviderConfig and LocalProviderConfig both
implement.

This is intended to be largely just a naming change to get started, so
we can deal with all of the messy renaming. However, this did also require
a slight change in modeling where the Resource.DefaultProviderConfig
method has become Resource.DefaultProvider returning a Provider address
directly, because this method doesn't have enough information to construct
a true and accurate LocalProviderConfig -- it would need to refer to the
configuration to know what this module is calling the provider it has
selected.

In order to leave a trail to follow for subsequent work, all of the
changes here are intended to ensure that remaining work will become
obvious via compile-time errors when all of the following changes happen:
- The concept of "legacy" provider addresses is removed from the addrs
  package, including removing addrs.NewLegacyProvider and
  addrs.Provider.LegacyString.
- addrs.AbsProviderConfig stops having addrs.LocalProviderConfig embedded
  in it and has an addrs.Provider and a string alias directly instead.
- The provider-schema-handling parts of Terraform core are updated to
  work with addrs.Provider to identify providers, rather than legacy
  strings.

In particular, there are still several codepaths here making legacy
provider address assumptions (in order to limit the scope of this change)
but I've made sure each one is doing something that relies on at least
one of the above changes not having been made yet.

* addrs: ProviderConfig interface

In a (very) few special situations in the main "terraform" package we need
to make runtime decisions about whether a provider config is absolute
or local.

We currently do that by exploiting the fact that AbsProviderConfig has
LocalProviderConfig nested inside of it and so in the local case we can
just ignore the wrapping AbsProviderConfig and use the embedded value.

In a future change we'll be moving away from that embedding and making
these two types distinct in order to represent that mapping between them
requires consulting a lookup table in the configuration, and so here we
introduce a new interface type ProviderConfig that can represent either
AbsProviderConfig or LocalProviderConfig decided dynamically at runtime.

This also includes the Config.ResolveAbsProviderAddr method that will
eventually be responsible for that local-to-absolute translation, so
that callers with access to the configuration can normalize to an
addrs.AbsProviderConfig given a non-nil addrs.ProviderConfig. That's
currently unused because existing callers are still relying on the
simplistic structural transform, but we'll switch them over in a later
commit.

Martin Atkins e21f0fa61e backend/local: Handle interactive prompts for variables in UI layer
During the 0.12 work we intended to move all of the variable value
collection logic into the UI layer (command package and backend packages)
and present them all together as a unified data structure to Terraform
Core. However, we didn't quite succeed because the interactive prompts
for unset required variables were still being handled _after_ calling
into Terraform Core.

Here we complete that earlier work by moving the interactive prompts for
variables out into the UI layer too, thus allowing us to handle final
validation of the variables all together in one place and do so in the UI
layer where we have the most context still available about where all of
these values are coming from.

This allows us to fix a problem where previously disabling input with
-input=false on the command line could cause Terraform Core to receive an
incomplete set of variable values, and fail with a bad error message.

As a consequence of this refactoring, the scope of terraform.Context.Input
is now reduced to only gathering provider configuration arguments. Ideally
that too would move into the UI layer somehow in a future commit, but
that's a problem for another day.

Martin Atkins be79bf0412 command: Fix TestPlan_outBackend
In an earlier change we fixed the "backendFromConfig" codepath to be
able to properly detect changes to the -backend-config arguments during
"terraform init", but this detection is too strict for the normal case
of running an operation in a previously-initialized directory.

Before any of the recent changes, the logic here was to selectively update
the hash to include -backend-config settings in the init case. Since
that late hash recalculation was confusing, here we take the alternative
path of using the hash only in the normal case and full value comparison
in the init case. Treating both of these cases separately makes things
marginally easier to follow here.

Comments here indicate that this was erroneously returning an error but
we accepted it anyway to get the tests passing again after other work.
The tests over in the "terraform" package agree that cancelling should be
a successful outcome rather than an error.

I think that cancelling _should_ actually be an error, since Terraform did
not complete the operation it set out to complete, but that's a change
we'd need to make cautiously since automation wrapper scripts may be
depending on the success-on-cancel behavior.

Therefore this just fixes the command package test to agree with the
Terraform package tests and adds some FIXME notes to capture the potential
that we might want to update this later.

Martin Atkins a3403f2766 terraform: Ugly huge change to weave in new State and Plan types
Due to how often the state and plan types are referenced throughout
Terraform, there isn't a great way to switch them out gradually. As a
consequence, this huge commit gets us from the old world to a _compilable_
new world, but still has a large number of known test failures due to
key functionality being stubbed out.

The stubs here are for anything that interacts with providers, since we
now need to do the follow-up work to similarly replace the old
terraform.ResourceProvider interface with its replacement in the new
"providers" package. That work, along with work to fix the remaining
failing tests, will follow in subsequent commits.

The aim here was to replace all references to terraform.State and its
downstream types with states.State, terraform.Plan with plans.Plan,
state.State with statemgr.State, and switch to the new implementations of
the state and plan file formats. However, due to the number of times those
types are used, this also ended up affecting numerous other parts of core
such as terraform.Hook, the backend.Backend interface, and most of the CLI
commands.

Just as with 5861dbf3fc49b19587a31816eb06f511ab861bb4 before, I apologize

Martin Atkins 8364383c35 Push plugin discovery down into command package
Previously we did plugin discovery in the main package, but as we move
towards versioned plugins we need more information available in order to
resolve plugins, so we move this responsibility into the command package
itself.

For the moment this is just preserving the existing behavior as long as
there are only internal and unversioned plugins present. This is the
final state for provisioners in 0.10, since we don't want to support
versioned provisioners yet. For providers this is just a checkpoint along
the way, since further work is required to apply version constraints from
configuration and support additional plugin search directories.

The automatic plugin discovery behavior is not desirable for tests because
we want to mock the plugins there, so we add a new backdoor for the tests
to use to skip the plugin discovery and just provide their own mock
implementations. Most of this diff is thus noisy rework of the tests to
use this new mechanism.
